
The higher self is the part of you that is connected to the source of all that is. This source is known by many names. Some call it the Godhead, Christ consciousness, Universal consciousness or creator energy. It all depends on your spiritual beliefs. It is believed that we are eternally joined to it, by our spiritual essence/soul; And that through this joining, we have access to a vast reservoir of information and wisdom.
Your higher self is constantly trying to get your attention. But finds it difficult to make itself heard, over the cacophony of noise and activity, that is a major part of our daily lives. That is why the most effective way of communicating with your higher self is through meditation. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what meditation is, let me try to explain it in simple terms. Basically, it is a means of quietening down the mind. It is also very helpful as a relaxation tool.
There are many different meditation techniques available. It can be difficult for a beginner to sit and think of nothing or have an empty mind. The best way to start is by only doing it for short periods of time. Focus more on relaxing your body. You will find, once the body starts to relax, the mind will follow. The easiest way to begin meditating is by focusing on the breath. If that does not feel right for you. Another easy but effective method is visualization. Pick a simple image and try to hold it in your mind. A favourite one of mine, is the image of a flickering candle. Or, a pool of still water with ripples slowly moving outward. By concentrating hard on trying to hold the image in your mind, it makes it more difficult for intrusive troublesome butterfly thoughts to take hold.
Butterfly mind, is something we all often experience. It is a mental state, where the mind races from one topic or idea to another with no logical pattern or order; which becomes even worse when we feel anxious. Meditation, is a wonderful way of gaining control over this type of thinking. It has also proven to be extremely beneficial to physical and emotional health. Some of the benefits experienced are – lower blood pressure, improved blood circulation, reduction in harmful cortisol levels and stress.
Meditation teaches mental discipline and control. It shows the individual that it is they who are in control of their thoughts, not the other way around. To see results, you must make it a regular practice. Just as when you wake up at the same time every morning, knowing you have to be up for work. It is the same with meditation, It becomes part of your regular routine. The mind will start to anticipate your meditation time, and will begin to automatically slip into quiet mode. The key is to start off small and build upon it.
A quietened mind can be likened to a pool of still water, into which you gaze and see your reflection clearly. Any disturbance across it’s surface seen with perfect clarity. This is how your higher self will be able to communicate with you. You will know, that the images you see, the words that you hear, will be it’s voice. When you tune-in to your higher self, you are connected to an ancient wisdom. Within it, is contained everything you need to know to help you make progress in your life. It can draw upon past life experiences, lessons learned from long ago.
Your higher self will share with you many things. It may be some wise words from spiritual masters, or helpful guidance from your spirit guides. You will begin to have a more philosophical and tolerant attitude to life. You will see the world from a higher perspective. Many describe a resurgence of joy in their lives; A deeper sense of gratitude and appreciation for all their many blessings. They focus less on the negative, and look forward to the future with hope and positivity.
Connecting to your higher self, will reinforce your belief in the world of spirit and energy. You will see clearly how we are all connected, and how those connections affect other people. This can often have the affect of increasing humanitarian interests, instilling within a strong sense of responsibility for this beautiful world that we live in, and each other. Your higher self is who you are, when you take away the physical outer cloak that you wear. An iridescent light that shines. Connect to your higher self, and allow your light to shine brightly!
